As a former USAID Foreign Service officer, I’m honored to join this exhibition, organized by AAFSW. I’m contributing several pieces I made while still posted in Zimbabwe, as I processed the end of my career as a diplomat and the sudden death of my sister, who served alongside me as a USAID Foreign Service officer.
Eight artists from the U.S. Foreign Affairs community show work shaped by lives lived abroad. Foreign Service employees, spouses, and partners draw on postings in bustling capitals, remote towns, and countries in transition, in painting, photography, mixed media, and fiber arts. The title points to what we share: a practice of interpreting cultures, and the common ground that connection finds across language and borders.
