About This Event

This April, we’re exploring new ways to experience the magic of cyanotype. I’m introducing a range of new classes—perfect for returning students and just in time for the school holidays. I’m especially excited to share new offerings, including photographic cyanotypes and printing on fabric.

Course descriptions are below. Please sign up here.

All classes are open to adults and children aged 10 and above. Children aged 6 and above are welcome to most classes if accompanied by an adult. Please select a class below to view the full course description. For any questions, feel free to contact Ẹlẹ́wà on WhatsApp.

The cyanotype process requires at least some sunshine. If the weather is not conducive, classes may be rescheduled to later in the day or the following day. Payments are due at the beginning of each class. As these are small, intimate sessions, spaces are limited—please register only if you plan to attend, and let us know if your plans change.

Introduction to Cyanotype

  • Wednesday 1 April, 10:00am-12:30pm, 3,000ksh, Ẹlẹ́wà Studio
  • Saturday 4 April, 10:00am-12:30pm, 3,000ksh, Nairobi Art Centre

Discover the magic of cyanotype sun prints! In this hands-on workshop, I will guide you through the simple and beautiful process of creating photographic prints using sunlight.

You are welcome to bring special leaves, feathers, lace, or other small objects from home, or explore the range of objects provided during the class. By arranging these materials on light-sensitive paper and exposing them to the sun, you will create striking blue-and-white prints to take home.

This art form is fun, relaxing, and accessible for all skill levels. The class is open to participants aged 10 and up. Children over 6 years old are also welcome if accompanied by an adult participant.

All materials are included for use during the workshop.

Two Part Series: Painting with Cyanotype Chemistry & Cyanotype Printing, Collage & Mixed Media

  • 8-9 April, 5,000ksh, Ẹlẹ́wà Studio

Prerequisite: All students should have completed the Introduction to Cyanotype Course to participate in this series. Open to students aged 10 and above.

Part 1: Painting with Cyanotype Chemistry, Wednesday 8 April, 7:00pm-8:00pm

In this session, students will prepare their own light-sensitive paper using cyanotype chemistry. Because cyanotype materials must be handled away from direct sunlight, this class takes place in the evening.

Using brushes, participants will apply the cyanotype solution to create shapes or patterns on their paper. These hand-coated sheets will dry overnight and will be ready for exposure in the sun during the next day’s printing session.

Students are also welcome to bring along previous cyanotype prints if they would like to create double exposures or add new painted elements to their work.

Part 2: Cyanotype printing, collage and mixed media, Thursday 9 April, 10:00am-12:30pm

In this session, students will print the light-sensitive paper they prepared the previous evening, exposing their hand-coated sheets in the sun to reveal their cyanotype images.

Students will also have the opportunity to explore a range of mixed-media techniques to transform their prints. They may choose to add color, draw on their images, or create collages using previous cyanotype prints.

This session highlights the many ways cyanotype prints can be adapted and reworked to create unique layered artworks.

Design and Sunprint Your Own Kanga

  • Saturday 11 April, 9:00am-12:30pm, 5,000ksh, Ẹlẹ́wà Studio

During this class, participants will explore the art of cyanotype alongside the rich history and visual language of East African kanga. Students will design their own kangas—developing original proverbs and patterns—and print them in cyanotype on watercolor paper.

Cyanotype on Fabric: Sunprint Your Own Lampshade

  • Monday 13 April, 10:00am-12:30pm, 6,000ksh, Ẹlẹ́wà Studio
During this class, participants will explore sunprinting on fabric, creating pieces that will be turned into lampshades. Final production will take place after the session, and completed lampshades will be ready for collection approximately one week later.

Cyanotype on Fabric: Sunprint Your Own Totebag

  • Wednesday 15 April, 10:00am-12:30pm, 4,000ksh, Ẹlẹ́wà Studio
During this class, participants will explore sun printing on fabric, designing and creating their own usable tote bag.

Cyanotype Photographic Printing

  • Friday 17 April, 9:00am-12:30pm, 6,000ksh, Ẹlẹ́wà Studio

Prerequisite: All students should have completed the Introduction to Cyanotype Course to participate in this series. Open to students aged 10 and above.

During this class, participants will explore the process of printing cyanotypes from digital negatives based on their own photographs. Some negatives will be prepared in advance, and students will also have the opportunity to learn how to create their own digital negatives during the session.

Cyanotype on Fabric: Sunprint Your Own Scarf

  • Saturday 18 April, 10:00am-12:30pm, 4,000ksh, Ẹlẹ́wà Studio

During this class, participants will explore sunprinting on fabric, designing and creating their own cotton scarf.
